With a pure white flame from its afterburner XS904 performs an engine check on the upper Avon. The Lightning’s unique engine layout had two after burning Rolls Royce Avon engines mounted one above the other. At full afterburner (or reheat as it is often referred to) acceleration was phenomenal but so was its ability to burn fuel. Very often the QRA aircraft would climb to height and in flight re-fuel before intercepting the target.
